Post and Beam
Back to
Project
History 2005
Kodi and Perry appreciate all the help from family and friends.
The project becomes more exciting with the passing of each event. The
install of the center post and the laminated main beam was a big event. The
center post has a story to share off it's own. Matt had a
standing dead tree that would work for the main post. He devised a plan to
load 20 feet of the tree onto his pickup truck to transport it to his saw mill.
And as usual for Matt's talents, the plan worked very well. A special
thanks to Dan and John for their help with the difficult phases of the project.
Matt had a dead-standing tree that would work for the center post. We used come-a-longs to hoist the tree to the top of Matt's truck. Forest, Allen, Perry, and Matt helped get the log on Matt's truck. Ray helped to unload the tree at the mill site. Matt and Allen laying out the 6 3/4" X 18" X 52' center beam. Matt and Allen working on the main center beam ends. Matt cutting the pattern at the end of the center beam for each end of the house. Matt is very skilled with a chain saw. Matt milled and hand hued the center post. It is 10 1/4" square by 20 feet high. Matt working on the main center post. Dan and John came with the line truck to set the east gable end, center post, and main beam. Dan was the truck operator. We set the east gable end first. John directed Dan while Forest, Matt, Allen, Chuck, and Perry helped set. Matt and Perry framed the east gable end on the loft deck. Dan picked the east gable end off the loft deck. John directed Dan to position the east gable end. The rest of the crew nailed the east gable end in place. Matt strung an line between gable ends to set the post height. Matt measured the center post and cut it length on the ground. With everything ready, Dan picked the center post. We set the center post on a rebar pin. Last set was the center 6 3/4" X 18" x 52' center lam beam. Allen ran the tag line to keep the beam inline with the building. The 52 foot long laminated beam weight was 2400 pounds. The line bed had no trouble picking the weight. With very little adjustment, the beam set in it's place perfectly. Everything was set in less than two hours. The gable ends, center post, and beam came out within a 1/8 of plan. Matt did a remarkable job in planning and execution. The cabin is taking shape and dreams are coming true, thanks to Matt, friends and family.
